Welcome to "The Diary of a Miner"; a blog detailing the adventures and mysteries that I, Syeonyx, embark upon in my quest to further my mining and survival skills! It'll be tough, there will be good times and bad times, but I'll always be alive to post my adventures... probably...

Day 78: Three down, a lot to go!

I couldn't sleep last night, I don't know why. Nor do I know why I randomly got up in the middle of the night and turned the tent around to face East! A little drastic, and also dangerous, but it seemed like a good idea at the time... I think it was meant to allow me to rise with the sun, and I must say it worked perfectly! I eventually got to sleep, but it seemed like mere minutes before sunlight streamed through the gap in the tent! I got up with the sun, and spent the first half an hour or so packing the tent away and preparing a breakfast. I was going to light a fire and roast some meat, but I decided it would be better to have that at the end of the day. I'd have something to look forward to then. After the light breakfast, I set off in the same direction as yesterday, towards the North West. It would be another hour or so until I needed to head due North, and then I would find the first location marked on the map... I just hope that I can do a lot of investigating today.

After about forty five minutes, I had made it as far North West as I could venture without moving away from the coast, and continued due North. From there it was a another hour or two to the first area I had ringed on the map. I still didn't know if I had fully understood the message that had come with the map... I was taking the word "maw" to mean something as general as a hole rather than something specific as a mouth. This was mainly because a large absence of mouths on the map! This meant I would have to do the same thing I did when I was searching for Jonas' house; look for the most probably locations, and then move onto the next most probable, all the while keeping a look out for high vantage points. Well, the latter part of the that didn't really apply... I had a feeling that the L7 were either holed up underground, or within the walls of a cliff. Essentially within sight, but never seen. Looking around, I couldn't see anything that would look like a place they could hole up in, and besides, why give me a new map piece if they were hiding in a location that existed on the first one? My sense of direction had drastically improved over the last few weeks, mainly due to the mass amount of travelling I had done. I had learnt to orientate myself accordingly with the sun, and move in the intended direction. Obviously the coast was my main guide, but it meant that I knew where I was going, and how to get there without having to refer back to the compass and map constantly! It left my hands free if I came across a guard and had to fight my way out. That was highly unlikely as I was still trying to be stealthy; moving quickly but quietly, freezing at the first sign of abnormal movement or noise, and keeping a watchful eye around in the trees and down in small holes. However, Chiron was ruining my stealth by running off ahead, becoming keenly interested in random things like trees, flowers and rocks and being a general nuisance! I couldn't blame him; he didn't know what was going on. He probably just thought we were going out for a long walk... Well we were... Only it was a VERY long walk to a new area.

I've got to the first location! It's quite close to the island crossing so it was on the way to the other side of the map. As I took the map out, I compared it to the surroundings: a small pool of water enclosed by land... It could be technically classed as a maw... On the map from an aerial view anyway. I put the map away and began to navigate around the pool, looking for signs that might indicate a base or building around or underneath. There were no cliffs of large geological structures around, so it was likely they would be underground... If they were here at all. I took the note out from my bag and studied the last line:

"Once what you seek has been found
Look for what should be underground."

I couldn't see anything unusual around that would be classed as belonging to a subterranean environment... Then again, what was classed in that area? Everything from gravel to diamond! I assumed this meant something that could only be found underground, and never at surface level. Instantly I thought of diamond, but it was doubtful. Why put exposed diamond on the surface where it could be mined by a wandering miner? I continued circling the pool, trying to find anything, but all I saw was water, stone, gravel and dirt. I did see a couple of very odd trees however. They had been stripped entirely of their leaves and branches, and only the trunks remained. I instantly rushed over, thinking it was a head start to begin with! On closer inspection, I noticed scorch marks... Fire? It had been raining last night... Maybe lightning had struck one of the trees, setting it on fire which then spread... The trunk was a hard, dense wood, which would allow for them to survive a fire. Additionally, it was raining; the fire may have initially started underneath the main canopy and built to a dangerous level before burning away the leaves and then being extinguished... Then again they could have been stripped off... However there was no sign of stress at the base of any branch... This was probably just a natural occurrence. Odd, but nothing notable...

I continued onwards, doubting that the first location posed any likelihood of being the right place. From the island crossing, it was simply a case of travelling due East until I reached the second location. I took out the map and crossed the first location off. I kept the map out this time, not having ever adventured this far, however I would still be able to stick to the coast and arrive at the right location. I was still looking out for my safety - and Chiron's... He obviously wasn't! - and kept a watchful out for any guards or sinister shapes! I still found it very odd that HoN Co. hadn't attempted to find me and "dispose" of me as they had with the other miners who had discovered a portal. Especially as I possessed the Solus stone, and presented a large threat the advance of their plan... Apparently. Aside from all of the guards at my house, I had seen one since breaking out from that cell... I had marked the location of that place on the first map, in the hopes it would provide some use to the L7. Although with a tower that huge, it was doubtful they hadn't already spotted it! If that belonged to HoN Co., they had a greater established presence in Minecraftia than I had initially expected. I just wondered how often the L7 came in contact with guards from HoN Co.... Or if they even had!

It's been a long walk and I'm nearing the second location... I think... A few minutes ago, I entered a sandy desert region, and it is hard to distinguish distance when everything looks the same! However the second location seems to be huge so it won't be hard to miss. It won't be easy to search through either though! I continued towards it until I noticed a small amount of land to the South which seemed to enclose the stretch of water currently to my right. As I continued, I rose over the crest of a hill to see the end of the water. A large wall of sand and stone stood above the pool which ended abruptly beneath it. I suppose the advantage with this one would be that everything looks the same, except for that which belongs underground!

This area was much larger than the previous one, and it took me to past midday to search all the way around! As the wall was higher than the water level, it was difficult checking everywhere. I assumed that the note referred to the base being in the centre of the maw... Even if it was a random pool of water. Maybe a mechanised system parted the water allowing people to cross over to the entrance and then hide it again. I guessed my job would be easier from an aerial point of view... I couldn't find anything that should belong exclusively underground anywhere near the pool or "maw". This was going to take days! There were loads of possibilities on the map hinting at "maw" and if I took it as generally meaning "hole" I would have to comb every section of the map with the utmost efficiency! Would I even find it? Maybe one of the L7 would be able to aid me further if I became too lost... I doubted it though... I saw this as the final test... And I didn't really want to be seen failing it...

The third location was about an hours walk to the South of the second location. With the most recent area marked off, I made my way towards the third and final location of the day. The sun was beginning to dip into the low area of the Western sky, and I wanted to hit the third area by the end of the day. Once again, this location was just essentially a pool of water, but still appeared as a hole from above. It was one of the first ones I had ringed due to the shape of it. It was unusual for a geological shape, and I wondered if there was anything more to that. This pool wasn't near to the coast, and so the previous methods of maintaining course without referring to the map was a little pointless. I took out the map and compass, and continued South until I came across the pool. As expected, it was as weird a shape as it was represented on the map, but it seemed more natural up front... There was no sign of anything unusual about it at all, yet it was difficult to search around as it the surrounding area was uneven.

After another hour, I had performed a thorough search on the area. As the entire ground area was uneven, I was able to get closer to the water's edge to take a closer look, but I could still find nothing... This was unlikely to be the right location anyway; geographically speaking it was an atrocious place to build a base. There was no protection from any angle, and it was easily spotted as an area of interest, even on a map! That was proved when I ringed it second! If the L7 are smart, they would not have built anything here...

The sun had begun to go down, and I needed to set up my tent, but it was still quite bright. I turned around and headed back the way I came, to the North. I wanted to cover as much ground as physically possible in the first day so it made it easier as the days went by. And I had a feeling it was going to be days and days! Judging from the map, I had made it about half way across the small desert area before the light receded almost entirely! I decided that enough was enough, and I was going to stop and make camp. As it was dry, I decided to make a campfire! I did this first, initially for warmth but also for light to see by and to cook food once I had the tent set up. I found a location that was ideal for masking the presence of a fire. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough to ensure I remained hidden... As long as I could keep the fire small...Putting the bag down, I went over to a few dead shrubs and plants, and pulled them. I then dug a small pit in the sand and placed the shrubs in it before lighting it with the flint lighter. Despite the downpour we had, the surrounding area was dry enough to start a fire pretty easily! Chiron had finished digging randomly in the sand and had settled down beside the fire. It had been an exhausting day, and I didn't blame him! He had practically decided to go for a swim in every pool we came across! Initially he wasted my time by slowing us down, but once he got the message that I wasn't going to stop and watch, he would climb out and happily catch up. I took some meat from the bag, unwrapped it, and placed it on a small rock which I centred over the fire. Yes, it had been a long day...

I'm quite pleased with the progress we made; three areas searched, and nothing noticeable was found. That meant that either I wasn't looking hard enough, or those weren't the right areas... I just hoped it was the latter, however as long as I found the actual base soon, I wouldn't mind. The steak I had was gorgeous! I don't know why, but freshly cooked over an actual wood - well, shrub - fire makes it taste so much better! Chiron seemed to think so too; he wolfed his down like a... Well, a wolf I guess... Taking out the map, I looked at the next areas that were to searched next; from the looks of it, it was a case of heading due North again for some time, and then following the coast to the next one, before returning inland for the third one, although if I could get that one done by the end of tomorrow, it would be an achievement! Let's just hope that I find the base tomorrow... The longer I'm outside camping, and looking for it, the more danger I put myself in my exposing myself... I had to be careful not to leave a trail of evidence behind me that could be followed. Things like the cloth that I used to wrap up the meat in would be something casually tossed away, but if the guards had wolves or dogs, they would pick up on that so quickly! I had to be careful...

I have a feeling I'm going to get lost...

Erm... Er... Ok... Where to begin... I've identified that the second map overlaps onto the first, so at least I know where I am... But where do I go? There are no signs, indicators, and there is no legend for me to use either! I've only been given a very cryptic message, presumably to help me find it...

"Begin your quest around the maw,
And you'll find what you're looking for.

Once what you seek has been found
Look for what should be underground."

I don't even know where to start with that... I'm trying to think of other definitions for the word "maw", but I keep coming back to mouth, or hole... I had to look for a hole? On a two dimensional map... How big was the hole? Was it even a hole? I put the maps down and gave the wolf a chunk of meat, which it happily took and ran off. Chiron seemed delighted by the company, and was about to chase after the other wolf when I called him back. He knows something is going off now! Going back to the map, I scanned every detail of the map with a great deal of scrutiny, but I couldn't make out anything that fit the description within the clues. Maybe it was a play on words, or a synonym which also meant maw... In any case, I've ringed a few possible locations, but I have a feeling it's going to like looking for a needle in the world's largest haystack! I could be camping outside for some time...

Comparing the two maps together, I was able to determine that the first location to check was at least a day away! It wasn't quite mid morning yet, but I still wouldn't get there by tonight. I would need to camp somewhere on the way. As I planned out the procedure for searching the locations, it occurred to me that it didn't matter if I had the boat or not; there were multiple locations on the second map which would have made it impossible to take a boat anyway. Going on foot would take longer, but I would have one less thing to worry. about. I packed the maps into the bag and put it next to the door. I quickly dressed myself in the my leather armour, and put the sword, bow and quiver against the bag. I was going to have to let Bessie go. She would die if I left her there as it was unlikely I would be coming back here... To be honest, I didn't quite know what was going to happen from now on. I suppose I would first have to find the location where the L7 are holed up, and then join them... From then it would be a mystery... I might not even be able to keep this diary going. I suppose it would be a very easy way of obtaining data about the internal workings of the group, especially if one of the L7 is a spy... I wish I hadn't thought of that! Now I imagining all kinds of scenarios where this whole thing could be a trap... Could THEROS actually be working for HoN Co.? Could this be just a ruse to get me to come to them? I doubted it; if this was the case, why did they let me easily destroy a number of portals that they supposedly needed? I decided that the large amount of secrecy that played into this entire scenario ruled out that chance of it being a trap for me... Surely...

Bessie has been set free, the house has been secured - torches extinguished etc. - and I'm now on my way to the location of the L7 hideout... Presumably! The bag is a little heavier than usual, but it's mostly full of food. I have no idea how long it will take to find this location. Maybe this is the final test; "if you can find us, you can join us" type of thing... Well now I was even more determined! I will find them! I began the journey as I almost always have done, by traveling West towards the stone beach. From there, it was a case of following the coast again to the North, then Head East over the island crossing, check out the first location and continue East to the next two. Then backtrack to the others, searching each one thoroughly, trying to apply the "Once what you seek has been found, look for what should be underground." bit of the riddle to the area... What did that bit mean? Was I looking for something on the surface that is usually underground? There were hundreds of possibilities: diamond, coal, gold, stone, dirt, lava... Maybe it was lava. Looking back at the map, I noticed a small red dot to the far East... Was that a pool of lava? Maybe that was it! I didn't really want to make my way to the far East to find something that had no relation to what I was looking for... Maybe what I was looking for would become more clear once I got closer to the area... Like a subliminal beacon, or a note hidden somewhere I would find it... I hoped so, otherwise I had a very bad feeling I was going to get badly lost...

It started raining again... About half an hour ago. I just made it to the end of the cliff and was making my way past the waterfall when it began... Unfortunately it's not a cooling rain... It's warm, and the air is still muggy... A fine mist has also descended, so visibility is partially reduced. As I passed the huge waterfall, I had to take another picture of it; it looked like a brilliant focal point to the area, and I was unlikely to be anywhere near it again! The sky had begun to get dark as well, but I couldn't tell if that was due to the rain or whether it was late. I couldn't see the sun, and it had been a few hours since I had left the house. Maybe it was a combination of both factors...

I continued following the coastline all the way around. I might be able to make the island crossing by the end of the day, but that was pushing it... I was soaked through, and the driving rain was hard to walk in, especially with the bag, and trying to keep an eye on Chiron. I had to keep stopping under trees, and the whole trip was taking longer than initially anticipated. Maybe I had overloaded the bag... Eventually I got about half way between the island crossing and the huge waterfall when I noticed the sky visibly darken! Was it really that late? The rain let up for a bit, and I was able to see the sun, beginning to slip beneath the horizon, casting an orange hue across the land. Suppose I would need to set up a small campsite for now... I wasn't in the mood to travel any further... I just hoped I got there by tomorrow...

I've set up the tent and I'm settling down for the night. Instead of the usual East-facing orientation, I've pointed it towards the West. The sky at the moment is a brilliant orange, and despite it still raining slightly, I want to watch the sun go down... Chiron was soaked and smelled of wet dog... Obviously... He must be tired as he couldn't wait to get into the tent after I finished putting it up! He curled straight into a ball and went to sleep! I was planning on having a campfire, but the rain seems to have put paid to that idea... Oh well, maybe tomorrow. For now, I'm content with some bread and milk. I hope the L7 have a wider variety of food. My body must be suffering from the almost total meat diet! On the upside, I always seem to have the energy to do things. I'm hoping whatever sleep I get tonight is enough to push my onwards to the right location. I used to be a big fan of camping, but the due to the increased frequency of experiencing it, it;s lost its appeal somewhat...

Day 77: It's time...

Today I woke up a little after the rise of the sun. Sleeping back upstairs, I was able to see when it had come up, and I always seem to wake up better in natural light. Needless to say, when I woke up, I was rather bored; I was still waiting on THEROS and their wolf to send me a message for me to go and meet with them. I really hoped that I would receive a message soon; I was becoming antsy, and I needed to do something! I had spent yesterday messing around with idle tasks that had no importance, under the assumption that if I wiled away the hours, when THEROS' wolf did turn up, I'd be surprised. Instead, the wolf hadn't arrived, there was still no note, and I was still bored, waiting for it! What was taking so long? Maybe they had to finalise a few things... Or maybe they had had a last minute discussion and had pulled out from the initial plan. I really hope not! Joining the L7 would be the one way I could get back at HoN Co. for everything they've done, to me and to every miner who ever found a portal... They were monsters, and the more horrific thing was that the public knew nothing of this. There was nothing in the agreement giving them the right to kill a miner if they discovered a portal. As it isn't public knowledge, the first thing any miner does when they find one is to contact HoN Co.! They had to be stopped before the needlessly slaughtered more miners. They could still be doing it right now, and I'm just sitting here, waiting for a letter from a person I've never even met!

I, once again, tried to employ the tactic I used yesterday whereby I occupy my mind and my time so I am actually surprised when THEROS' wolf turns up. It didn't really work yesterday as half the time I kept turning around to see if the wolf was there! I suppose I just needed to engross myself in a task that was time and attention consumptive. I looked out of the window, and noticed I hadn't replanted any wheat back into the little field behind the house. I had quite a bit of wheat still stored up, and going back through the chest, I found the small pouch of seeds I had used last time. I suppose I could go and reseed the ground... It was a little pointless, but it was something to do whilst I waited. I took the pouch out, along with a hoe and got dressed. The rain had let up, for now at least, and the ground was nice and moist for receiving the seeds. There was little to no effort needed to till the soil, and after about half an hour, I had planted two rows of seeds. Soon I would have more wheat... Well... There would be more wheat to harvest, but chances are I wouldn't be here when it was ready!

Still no sign of the wolf... I'm bored again now... I have nothing to do; the items I need to go and find this place are already packed and waiting. I think Chiron is ready; he still knows something is going off soon, he won't settle down. I would use him as an early warning system to tell me when the wolf is here, but he's probably too full of energy to sit still and look for things! I decided to go down into the library again and have another scan through the titles. Even if the L7 had all the information they needed, it was always worth a look, just in case. I couldn't find anything of use, but as I was about to leave, I noticed the small office that was hidden off to the side still open. I went in, and looked straight in the chest. I found the diary that belonged to Jonas again. I would definitely bring this... It might reveal some things about HoN Co. or the Creepers that the L7 didn't know about yet... I put the diary under my arm, and then exited the room, before reaching up and pushing up on the lever. The bookshelves began to slowly grind back into place, and within a few moments, the room was no longer visible. There wasn't even a crack or a seam to peer through! I made my way back upstairs via the ladder, and added the book to the bag. I wonder what the L7 would make of it...?

The wolf is here...! As i turned around from putting the diary in the bag, I heard a bark, and looked through the windows of the door. Outside, was the wolf staring at the cow through the slats in the door of the pen. It was here! The note was finally here! I had my instructions, and now I would meet the L7! I opened the door slowly, and the wolf noticed me and ran towards me expectantly. I stroked it and then turned my attention to where it had been standing; on the floor was a small note and another piece of paper... What was this? Was this another long message that required two pages? The wolf walked back towards the pen door and began barking at the cow again, whilst I maintained concentration on the notes. I went over to them, and stooped to pick them up.

Further inspection of the two pieces of paper revealed one was a note, whilst the other, larger piece, was a map! Looking at it, I couldn't really tell where this was; was it even linked to my map? I went back inside, dug my map from the bag and compared the two. I then began to notice similarities in the maps. This new map seemed to encompass a few elements of the first map, however it also showed a greater degree of the landmass to the North! There were no markings or signs of any kind to indicate the location, nor was there a legend. How would I find the location from a map with no signs?

I put the maps down, and looked at the note. It was a short note, with four sentences written on it:

"Begin your quest around the maw,
And you'll find what you're looking for.

Once what you seek has been found,
Look for what should be underground."

Very cryptic... Looking back at the map, I tried to make sense of it, but turned up nothing... "Maw"? What was it referring to there? A hole...? A mouth...? A... Something!?!?! But what?

Day 76: The 3 R's: Rest, relaxation and... erm... more rest!

Last night's sleep was possibly the greatest sleep I have ever had, bar none! As I had said, I spent the night down in the hidden library as it always seemed cooler than the rest of the house. I was right! It was beautiful down there! So much so, I slept for hours into the day! I hadn't realised how late it was because of the lack of natural light. It was something natural that woke me up... The sound of greatly welcomed rain awoke me from my slumber, and after wiping the sleep from my eyes, I made my way quickly upstairs into the house. Sure enough, as I looked out of the window, the sky was a murky grey, the clouds were large and numerous, and it was raining heavily! I was so thankful; it had been overwhelmingly hot over the past few days, and we really needed a rainstorm to cool things down. Looking back at the clouds, I just hoped that they brought thunder and lightning with the rain!

After a few moments literally dancing in the rain - I don't know why, it just felt like the right thing to do - I came back inside and decided to plan the day out. Despite the rain being greatly welcomed by me at least, it prevented me from doing most things outside; I didn't want to get THAT wet... I had already wasted quite a large portion of the morning, but I didn't want to be a slob and get back into bed. Instead I decided to come up with a game plan for the next few days. THEROS' wolf was likely to back at any time soon, provided they knew I had destroyed the portals. That meant I was going to meet THEROS, and the others of the L7. Chances are, it would be a good, long walk away, and aside from sleep and rest, I needed to get some stuff together. I had my concealed leather armour which was currently thrown across the back of the bed. I had the tools, the weapons, the sleeping and camping equipment, the map and compass, plus the Solus stone. I could bring a few books, but chances are the L7 would have all the resources they needed. What did I need though... It would simply be a case of stuffing everything into the bag when it was time, and be out the door within a few minutes of receiving the note. I went over to the chest to see what was inside that I could use; there was still quite a bit of wheat left, and some extra bread on the journey couldn't hurt...

I spent until midday baking bread. I've got about three loaves now, and the house smells delicious! I could take a few pieces of meat, however I was tempted to try cooking them as I went rather than wasting them. Plus it would be nice to have a hot meal when camping. I would just need to be careful if I did it during the night; I didn't want to bring any unnecessary attention to myself. Oh, that was necessary! The flint lighter was beginning to wear down, so I dissembled it and replaced the small piece of iron and flint, and rebuilt it. There! Worked like new! Now I could at least make a fire if there was call for one. Ideally I would like to have access to my boat, but I suppose it wouldn't be of any use to me if the location wasn't too far away. Putting the flint lighter on top of the stove, I looked out of the window and noticed it had stopped raining. Right, well now I could do what I was going to do initially! I picked up a bucket and went outside. Bessie seemed pleased to see me, and nudged me gently as I entered into the pen. I think I just have a way with animals... Maybe I should have been a vet? Oh well, too late now. A few moments later, I had a bucket full of milk which I siphoned off into glass bottles, and then submerged them underwater. I hoped this would keep them cool until I needed them. It had worked last time. Just as I began to return from the other side of the house, it started to rain again. Huge droplets fell from the sky, and once again I performed a silly little celebratory dance before going back inside.

After drying off, I couldn't think of anything else that needed doing, but as soon as I left the house, I knew I'd remember something! Sod's Law always struck at about that time... I checked all of the tools I was taking, including the sword, and the bow. They were all in good condition, and any work on them was an act of futility. It wouldn't make them more efficient, it would just make them look better. The map was secure, and the compass worked. I had taken to wrapping the stone in a cloth to protect it, but that seemed futile as well. I had the food covered. I went through the chest again, and it was at this point that Chiron became suspicious. I could tell he knew something was going off; something was about to change. He wouldn't stop fussing around with the contents of the bag; he kept pulling the map out for some reason, and trying to hold it open whilst he looked at it! I couldn't contain myself and began laughing. At least I would have company on the next journey I took. I just hoped he could contain himself on the actual journey to meet the L7. I also hoped the rain would let up! I love the rain, but not if I have to walk for hours through it. I'm sure Chiron wouldn't care about the rain, as long as he was generally enjoying himself!

I began to get jumpy towards the end of the day; I kept thinking that there was someone or something at the door, and went over to open it. On every occasion, there was nothing there; no wolf, no person no note... Maybe they had already sent the note, but it had been blown away by the wind or something... I doubted this would happen because I had a strong feeling they were monitoring me. If they were, they knew I had destroyed the portals, and they knew I was back at the house. They would then send a note, and I would receive it and follow the instructions. I was under the assumption that wherever they were based, it must be hidden within my quadrant... Somewhere close by for them to send rapid communications and to spy on me. Oh well, I'd find out soon enough!

I can't sleep... It's still raining, it's incredibly cool everywhere and I know I need to sleep, but I can't... I've spent the better part of an hour staring at the ceiling, trying everything to send me to sleep. I think I might find a really boring book and see if that sets me to sleep... It could work. I hope it works...

Day 75: Made it back home! Just...

I think I underestimated the distance I had to travel today; I thought that getting back to Jonas' house by the end of the day was going to be easy. Then I looked at the map again. I had a LOT of ground to cover! The only good thing about it was I had been awoken early by this thought, early enough to get a head start! Within a few minutes of waking up, I had eaten a quick, but sufficient breakfast and had everything packed away... All by the time the sun had finished climbing over the horizon!

I really wanted to get home by the end of the day; the longer I took, the greater the chance I had of missing the note from THEROS! It was unlikely that their wolf would give up and return, but there was a greater chance of wondering what a wolf is doing outside a supposedly abandoned house with a note! That would not be good, and would put everyone at risk, especially the L7. It was at this time that I decided to jog part of the way. The bag was lighter than it had been when I set off because of the food I had eaten, and I was able to jog short distances in small bursts. If I kept this up, I would stand to reduce my time by at least an hour or so... I just hoped that would be enough. The last thing I wanted was to be running around in the dark, trying to hide from Creepers and guards AND trying to get home in one piece! After a few hours of jogging in bursts, and walking to catch my breath, and then jogging again, I came to the small crossing where the two islands partially joined with a sand bank. This would have been the difficult part for me yesterday, had I been able to take the boat back! Resting under a tree, I noticed that it would probably have been easier than expected because one part of the bank dipped into the water. It wasn't shallow enough to row the boat through, but easily shallow enough to drag it through with less effort. As I rested, I took the chance to take a look around; I was mainly keeping an eye open for guards, or worse. I had only seen one guard so far on the entire journey, and he was guarding my boat! I was just wondering how well equipped HoN Co. was to deal with a situation like this... I was technically an expensive threat... I had the capability to destroy any portal I came across, and yet they hadn't sent out any kind of search team to look for me! They seemed to have positioned a few guards in locations I was likely to return to, like the boat and my house. But surely even they would be smart enough to cover all the bases! It didn't matter anyway; I couldn't see anyone around, and I was more or less at the halfway point. Just a case of following the coast to the South until I found the stone beach, and then head East!

I crossed over to the other side, and then broke into a gentle jog again, continuing South this time. It would be another two hours before heading in a roughly South Easterly direction before heading South again towards the big cliffs, and the pool. I had taken to holding the map in my hands again, as opposed to putting it in my bag. I knew exactly where I was going as it was simply a case of following the edge of the waterline. From it, I could compare landmarks as I passed them, and admire the accuracy, and yet detailed complexity of the map in comparison to their real-life counterparts. Small pools of water visible on the map would also be recognisable without the map, just because of the way they were drawn! At one point I decided to go inland a bit rather than follow the coast. The edge of the coast had begun to crumble slightly, creating a dangerous rocky outcrop a few metres above a shallow part of the water. As much as I was in a hurry, I didn't want to injure myself for the sake of a few minutes! After traversing the outcrop, I returned to the original path. After two hours, I changed direction with the coastline, as it mad its way to the South East. It would be another two or so hours, depending on how much of it jogged, and then I would reach the cliffs and the huge waterfall!

Looking out across the water to the East, I can see that strange little island I had investigated weeks ago when searching for the house. I had ringed it on the map due to its curious little square beach it had on the far East side. As I had explored, it turned out to be a natural formation, rather than proof of someone living there. Now that I thought about it, if Jonas was part of the L7, it would have been stupid to so easily identify the location of his house on the map. I can only assume that others like me would make similar assumptions based on the layout of the land, and explore the most geographically odd locations first. Where better to hide a house like that then in the middle of nowhere! I continued in the same direction, following the water, seeing the reflection of the sun above. It was past midday already! I began to jog again, knowing that I couldn't risk wandering around outside during the night. Not only was it dangerous for my safety, but it made it easier for people to follow me without me knowing. It didn't mean anyone was following me now, but that was the only way I could assume the L7 were keeping tabs on me so well...

I've made it to the waterfall! It seems to be more and more beautiful every time I see it! It was a graceful piece of geological formation that could easily be altered to hide the location of a very big base! It gushed forth from the actual cliff I kept mentioning, and I began to wonder if it was possible that the L7 were holed up there... I doubted it mainly because of the close proximity to Jonas' house. But still...

I was nearly home; another four hours or so and I would be there... Well, three maybe if I hurried. The sun had already started to shift into the lower region of the Western sky, but because of the cliff obscuring the view, it was difficult to tell where exactly... It was still quite light however, so I assumed I had enough time. I didn't think jogging was necessary anymore; I only had to travel South until the stone beach, and then due East until I reached the house. From then, it was simply a case of waiting... I just hoped that THEROS didn't try to pull one over on me by saying there's another portal that needs destroying! I've earned the right to meet the person who is giving me these dangerous tasks... Come to think of it, I don't think they've ever thanked me... Well with at least six destroyed portals under my belt, I think I've earned an audience with my "task master"... As I neared the halfway point between the stone beach and the huge waterfall, the sky began to darken... I wasn't anywhere near home yet! Once again I had underestimated my progress! Beginning to jog again, I kept it up for a greater distance, all too aware of the perils of the night! Within half the usual time, I reached the stone beach; the sky was a murky blue, with the stars beginning to come out. Across the Western sky, the sun was mostly obscured by the horizon, and slipping away fast! It was going to be close. Just another half an hour to an hour or so to go!

I think I've made it! I can see a faint light in the distance... I didn't realise it, but the house seems to be more visible at night than I had first thought! Crossing over the crest of a hill, before me lay the boundary wall, with the house contained inside. I was nearly there! Just a few hundred metres to go... I jogged the rest of the way, with the sun slipping further and further away, the light ebbing with it... The sky had become cloudy which seemed to reduce the impact of the receeding light, but I was still not going to slow down! I was breathless and wincing in pain slightly at the intense pain flaring from my side, but I had made it! I had never been more happy to see this place! It had been sanctuary to me so man times. I would be sad to leave it for the presumed "safety" of the the L7 hideout... I chuckled slightly at how much that made it sound comical... Hobbling slightly from the pain an lack of breath, I made my way into the house. I needed a rest!

Phew! I'm so exhausted! I think I'll sleep like a baby tonight! Not a crying, whining one... I mean a baby that actually SLEEPS!!! The good thing about it was knowing that there was nothing of particular importance that needed doing urgently either... No more portals... Yet! Despite the sun going down, it was still really hot and muggy, and the entire day spent walking around out in the sun had really exhausted me. I think I'm going to have some milk before having a nice cool sleep down in the library. It always was cooler down there for some reason... Oh well... Goodnight!

The LONG way back...

After the little break I had, I decided it would be best to head off. I still didn’t know if anyone was following me, but I didn’t want to risk it, especially if HoN Co. had a plan set up for me! I waited until the stone had fully recharged before putting it in my bag; the last thing I wanted was to find out that another portal was hidden nearby and I hadn’t waited to see if the stone was glowing! It wasn’t, thankfully, so I packed it away and headed off. I’d decided to keep my bow in my hand for most of the journey, especially as I pretty much knew where I was going. I had the compass and the map if it came to it, but I doubted it would. As I left the dirt hovel, I made a note of the time; about midday, maybe a little earlier… The reason for this was because I was going to be spending the next few hours walking a very long and boring tunnel,. Completely encased in dirt, gravel, stone and who knows what else! I took the path to the right and located the small hole with a staircase leading down. I was going to be rather bored for the next few hours…

I was right; the journey through the tunnel WAS boring! It was more than boring… It was so mind numbingly boring I could rather sit through an insurance seminar and still be more interested than I was down here! I don’t know why, but for some reason my mind didn’t want to wander, as it would usually so frequently do… I tried a number of methods to get the ball rolling, so to speak: humming, whistling and singing didn’t work. Physically trying to force my brain to think about something ended up with nothing as well… It wasn’t until the last few minutes or so that I actually started to think! Better late than never I suppose, but maybe it was the dull monotony of the tunnel that was stopping me from thinking… I had achieved the task that THEROS had asked of me, and I would now have to make my way back to Jonas’ house and wait for further instructions. Plan A was to take the boat that I remember leaving on the beach near to the portal down in the pit, provided it was there or it wasn’t being guarded. Plan B was to simply walk all the way back! Obviously plan A had problems, but it was still faster than plan B, and I stood a good chance of getting back to the house quicker. I emerged from the tunnel into the chamber. Thank God! At least from here on out, if my mind still refused to work, I could look at the scenery! I slung the bow over my shoulder, and took out the map as I ascended the stairs. From where I was, it was a short walk to the South East to the boat. I put the map away and climbed out of the pit, before taking my bow in hand again. I was very edgy… as I passed through the trees I became aware of whistling… I slowed down, and lowered myself to the ground, whilst continuing in the direction of the boat… Was that a guard? Had they finally sent someone to find me? As I came over the edge of a hill, I stopped… I stayed crouching and peered around from behind a tree. There was my boat… But also a guard…

I knew it! I knew at some point along this trip there would be someone to mess it up! I had spent my entire time on edge, weary on case there was a guard around the next corner, or hiding in a tree behind me. But no, there had been no-one. Not until the last leg of my journey! All I had to do was take the boat and row across to the small link in the islands and then either drag the boat across or walk the remainder of the journey! Maybe someone from HoN Co. had been watching me… Maybe they still were! It didn’t matter now. I had destroyed the portals, and I would obviously have to be at my most vigilant now. At this point, I had two options: 1) Take out the guard with an arrow and take the boat. It was risky, especially if there were hidden guards watching this one. 2) Continue walking the rest of the journey, and ignore the boat. This would mean I wouldn’t get back to the house until tomorrow at the earliest, but I wasn’t about to kill a human being for the sake of a wooden boat! Especially if it put me at risk! I turned around, and crept back towards the North until the tree line covered my position. I stood up and continued the journey to the East. It was going to be another long journey back, and I was going to have to camp for one more day. I really hope they don’t find me…

Finding the guard near the boat may have actually helped my brain! Since that incident, I had been able to let it wander, even though where it went wasn’t always pleasant. I had thought about the consequences of a number of events that could have unfolded. What would have happened if I had randomly blazed through the trees and the guard had seen me? What would have happened if I had killed the guard? It got me thinking about a weapon that I could use without it weighing on my conscience. An arrow was too powerful and not very accurate, especially with me. A sword meant the guard had to engage me, and there was the risk of losing, which was greater than me winning due to my dislike of close quarters combat. The only other option was a long distance stunning alternative. A sedative or a poison that could be fired as a dart from a blow pipe, or something along those lines… It would ensure I could remove the threat of guards from a distance without killing them! Obviously this would have to be conducted when I was with THEROS and the other five members of L7. I wouldn’t know where to start with that kind of thing… The only lead I would be able to go from would be something to do with the cacti around the area… Or maybe from a giant spider…? It didn’t matter now; I had ignored the guard and continued with plan B. That’d be another question added to the already-endless list of questions I had in mind. The sun had begun to go down by the time I reached the small crossing to the other island. Another five minutes or so and I’d be on the other side, hopefully safe and hidden from the guards of HoN Co. and the figure. That is if they’re not still tracking me…

As it was nearly nightfall, there wasn’t enough heat to dry me off. But I was wearing a leather overall, and I wasn’t overly wet as it is. I continued Eastwards for a further twenty minutes of so until it became almost impossible to see where I was going. I set the bag down, picked out a torch and stick it into the ground before lighting it. Using that light, I then erected the tent around the torch. I was getting better: the tent was fully erected within a matter of minutes, and the sleeping bag was down too! Now all I had to do was get some sleep and hope no-one found me! It was going to be another day’s trek to the South until I reached the house, and then it was the waiting game all over again. I took the map out again and studied it: from my estimates, I was about two fifths of the way already. Once you got past the long tunnel, the rest of the journey didn’t seem so bad… All I needed to do was stick to the coast, check the map every now and again, and keep an eye out for any more guards. If they had began guarding the boat, they obviously knew I was around somewhere, and were likely to be still looking for me. If I could get to the house before the end of tomorrow, I’d probably be safe.

Despite the long journey, and the large amount of walking I had done over the past few days, I wasn’t very tired at all! I wish I had brought a book with me to keep entertained, but I hadn’t thought it was necessary. I had the note from THEROS, which I had read a few times, and I still couldn’t get past the proposal. They were willing to enter me into the L7 to help take down HoN Co.! I didn’t know what I could bring to them; from the sounds of it, each member had a specific role. At least, that’s the idea I got when I heard one of them was a scientist working on the Creepers. I didn’t have a vast knowledge or experience with anything really… I knew the lay of the land quite well now, but chances were where I was going to join them would be nowhere I had been before. It would all be new to me. I’m going to try and get some sleep. Even if I’m not tired, I don’t want to let my guard down on the last leg of the journey because I’m drowsy!

Day 74: The last of the portals are destroyed!

I woke up quite early today; my tent was facing East, and so I essentially woke up with the sun! I knew that today was going to be the last leg of the journey, and then I could begin my way back. I had decided last night that I was going to take the boat back, if it was still there, as it would be easier and quicker, even if I did only take it as far as the little join between the islands. I packed away the tent and sleeping bag, and had a quick breakfast before setting off. I wanted to make rapid progress this morning, and hopefully be back at the dirt hovel via the tunnel before midday. That way, I could make the journey to the temple, destroy the two portals, and then go back through the tunnel to the beach where I left my boat. If the boat wasn’t there, I would simply have to walk back. If that was the case, then I would probably make it back home late tomorrow evening.

The walk to the small gap between islands was rather peaceful and serene; I think at some point last night, a lot of stress and tension seemed to relieve itself. I doubted that the HoN Co. guards, or the figure would be prowling around this island, which allowed me to take in the scenery, whilst maintaining a fast pace. As for anyone from L7, I couldn’t be sure… Someone could be following me… Tracking me… Watching my every move… It was unsettling that someone could be doing that, even if they happened to be on my side. Without the need to think about the journey, I allowed my mind to wander, to the point where I lost track of time! I don’t know how long it took, but it seemed like only minutes from setting off to actually arriving at the passing! Before me was a small body of water that was considerably shallower than I had first imagined! There was also an island in the middle, and the passing was nowhere near as wide as I had initially thought. Looks like I’d be getting wet, but there would be no swimming involved! Not yet anyway…

I waded the short distance across to the small island in the middle, and then continued the rest of the trip to the other side of the island. From here, it was simply a case of finding the location of the previous portal, go down to the tunnel and follow it West until its end. As it was still hot, I dried off very quickly, which made life easier. The leather bag was waterproof as well, so it was a good job I had stashed the map away. I took it out though at this point, trying to recall the location of the flat, cobblestone pit. I was approaching it from a different direction this time, so there were no useful landmarks or noticeable features to use as guides. Also, because of the large tree density in the area, it was difficult determining how far inland I was on the map. I continued West, in the general direction of the red circle. I was being more cautious now about my surroundings due to the large amount of Creepers I had seen on this island before! Admittedly, I had managed to drive them into the portal – where they may have originated from in the first place – but I didn’t want to come across anymore! I was well equipped to take one down if it came to it, but I was hoping that the cost was all clear. I was also weary for guards as this would be one of the key locations that they would think I would use to get back to the portals. Well, if they had thought of that, they were right! However, I didn’t see anyone or anything, and within an hour of leaving the water behind, I had come across the pit! It was much easier to spot when I approached from the East as there was no cover for it. Usually it would hide under a small lip, but this time it was fully exposed!

Climbing down into the pit, I made my way towards the small arch that an overhang of dirt had created. A few weeks ago, a portal had hidden beneath this. I destroyed it, and found more than I had bargained for, when large chunks of dirt had slid aside to reveal a stairway leading down, and around a corner. Continuing to the still open doorway, I looked down towards the bottom. This next bit had creeped me out… I had followed the tunnel around to find it led to a small dungeon with a huge spider and a cage inside! I had killed the spider and then seemed to be stuck at a dead end. That was until I got a lucky break with the chest that was placed within the chamber. It had struck the wall a little too harshly when I had opened it, revealing a small gap behind it with a lever. From there, I had found the tunnel, followed it and found the dirt hovel. It had pretty much begun here… If I hadn’t found that lever, I would probably be able to safely return to my house… Getting to the bottom of the stairs, I became instinctively weary. I removed the bow from over my shoulder and readied an arrow. I wasn’t taking any chances; especially as the closer I got to the dirt hovel, the greater the chance of coming across a guard, or the figure! Coming to the end of the corridor, I edged into the small, brightly lit chamber to find no-one… The chest was in the exact same spot as I had left it after discovering the lever, and the hidden door was still open… Maybe there was no-one around…

The next three to four hours was very boring… Once again, travelling down the same tunnel I had passed down within the last few weeks… It had seemed like an eternity had passed since then! I had found more portals, been captured and held against my will, escaped and then hunted down, forced to retreat to the East to the house of a dead miner who had belonged to a group who were plotting to take down the very company I worked for! A LOT had happened since then… Despite the bow and arrow still in hand, I had relaxed slightly, and my mind had gone back to wandering again. I was still fascinated by this “L7” group that THEROS had become part of. Hopefully, soon I would be granted access into their inner workings, and help to take down a company who had committed so many acts of violence and evil! At times like these, I’m glad I never got married or had kids! They would more than likely have been taken for ransom and tortured, with the threat of death unless I turned myself in… I also started to think about where L7 might be based… For all I knew, they could be based right under my house and I would never know about it! I doubted it, but it was bound to be somewhere nearby if they were able to send rapid communications and keep an eye on me!

I had begun to tire from all of the walking. I needed a rest, but I knew I was close to the end, and I could rest sufficiently when I was waiting for the stone to recharge. I quickly checked inside my bag to make sure it was still there: it was! In the distance, I could see the end; it looked like a bare wall, as though the tunnel randomly ended, but I knew that it formed a brief staircase up to the dirt hovel. I was nearly there! Just a further ten minutes or so. Not able to take my mind off the current objective, my mind became overly paranoid, and I was back to holding the bow and arrow ready. Finally getting to the staircase, after what seemed like eternity, I slowly climbed up them, and carefully peered out: nothing, no-one! I couldn’t see or hear anything or anyone nearby, so I cautiously stepped out of the tunnel and onto the thin platform. I edged my way round, bow and arrow at the ready the whole time! I got round to the front, but still no-one… Opening the door, I edged in… I put the arrow away and lowered my bow… Maybe there was no-one! I walked over to the left of the room where the trapdoor had been, expecting it to have been filled in, but it was still open from when I had last been here. I lowered myself into the hole, and began to descend. As I did, the smell of rotting meat filled my nostrils, and I remembered why I hated this place! Trying not to gag, I got to the bottom, and turned to face the temple; there it was! Constructed from an odd stone, it contained two of the remaining three portals I had to destroy. The last time I had been here, the plan hadn’t followed through as well as I’d hoped. In fact it had gone badly wrong! This time, it was different. This time, I was prepared…

I entered the temple, and straight ahead I could see the shimmering purple of the portal. It had been awhile since I had seen one, and the sight of the iridescent purple rift made me shudder slightly… I began to advance towards it, careful not to make too much noise in case a guard or a Creeper was hiding somewhere. I entered the small chamber that the portal was contained in and got straight to work; taking the stone from the bag, I placed it onto the bottom of the frame and stood well back, in the archway.

The same process happened again after a few seconds; the rift began to change colour from a deep purple, to a sickly green, and the stone slowly faded from sight. The obsidian frame of the portal then began to warp and distort inwards towards the centre of the rift. This was it. I watched through the entire process, as the frame slowly began to crumble, and was pulled into the centre. The rift began to slow down, losing energy as more and more of the frame disappeared into the void! After a few moments, the last few fluttery purple particles disintegrated and disappeared. I waited a few moments more until the stone began to glow ever so slightly. It would take another hour or so before this stone was recharged and ready to destroy the last portal. Time to scout out the area!

I went back upstairs, noticing the putrid smell retreat slightly. Was there a link to the smell and the portals? It didn’t matter… Soon the last portal would be gone, and I could make the return journey. As I got to the top of the ladder, I felt a sickening feeling of déjà vu… I slowly entered into the room, and stared at the doorway. But there were no shadows, no faces or anything to suggest a presence. There were no noises either… Walking out of the door, I turned around and looked up at the staircase to see if there was anybody there… Nothing… I went back inside. I put the bag on the ground, and placed the stone on top of the table to watch it as it began to recharge. I began drinking some milk, looking around the room at the same time. Despite being here for the second time, I still didn’t know who this house belonged to! Was it one of all of the L7? I doubt it! It must be a miner who moved on after… Wait though… When I had first found this place, there was a bowl of hot soup still steaming on the stove! None of this added up! Whoever lived here must still live here! Surely…? Maybe they had ties to HoN Co. or the figure… I cast it from my mind, trying to keep it alert. I finished the milk and began on a chunk of bread. After finishing it, I took the stone in my hand and went back outside to hide. If I disappeared, maybe someone would come back. I couldn’t be entirely sure that no-one was watching over the house. I sat and hid in a location which overlooked the house and the stairway leading down to it. If anyone came up from the tunnel, they would pass me to get to the door, so I would see them!
I stayed there for some time, waiting for someone – anyone – to walk past, but no-one did. It was odd; here was a very valuable target to HoN Co. and the figure! I had gone missing, with the stone, and it hadn’t occurred to them to post some guards to prevent me from destroying them…? It was either a very stupid point they had overlooked, or they were setting a trap… Knowing HoN Co. a little better, I guessed the latter, but I didn’t want to be the one to spring it! Eventually, the stone regained its original colour, and it began to glow with an intense yellowy hue! I went back inside, closing the door behind me. Going back down the ladder, I went back to the temple and to the remaining portal in a small chamber to the right. Repeating the exact procedure as last time, I stood back and watched the show! It was oddly beautiful how it worked, and it also served a purpose. After a few moments, the last portal had completely disappeared from existence, and the stone began to reappear. I picked it up, and returned to the house. Now all I had to do was return home. Well, I say “home”… The house of Jonas. I would be leaving there soon anyway. I wasn’t sure how the L7 or THEROS knew whether I had destroyed the portals or not, but I assumed they would find out somehow.

I’m having a quick rest before I head back. The journey has been tiring, and I just need a few minutes to have something to eat, something to build up my energy before heading off. I’m not going to go to sleep as I’m in a precarious position as it is simply being here! I’ve finished the task the THEROS demanded of me, and hopefully I will be leading a whole new life as someone else within the next few days… I wonder if I’ll get a nickname…? Surely THEROS isn’t their real name?
